It was a beautiful day on Dauphin Island but a bit chilly for most as they waited for the parade to come down the road. Some folks bundled up in their winters warmest. Some brought blankets and relaxed in comfort.

Others stayed warm by playing in the street.

Before long, the street was cleared and the patience of the parade goers was rewarded with mounted men, marchers and music.

Wayne Dean made an appearance as Joe Cain’s Chief Slacabamorinico. Joe Cain was a hero of Mobile Mardi Gras. During and after the Civil War, Mardi Gras celebrations had come to a halt. In 1868, Joe Cain, dressed as the fictitious Chief Slacabamorinico, marched the streets of Mobile in defiance of the Union army’s occupation and much to the delight of the citizens of Mobile. He revived the celebration of Mardi Gras in Mobile. Now the Sunday before Mardi Gras is Joe Cain Day with a parade and other festivities.

Politics is often a feature of Mardi Gras. Sometimes to show support for a candidate and sometimes in good natured fun. The krewe of one float announced the candidacy of Dolly Parton for President in 2024. At 78 years old, she would be the youth and beauty candidate for 2024.

As long as the candidate and their supporters bring beads and other throws, they generally find a warm welcome.

Of all the floats and marchers, perhaps the most interesting and heart warming was the float dedicated to the infant, Miles, first Mardi Gras. Happy Mardi Gras Miles!
